Door manufacturer Manse Masterdor Ltd has supplied the University of Nottingham’s state-of-the-art energy efficient BASF Eco House project with thermally efficient external doorsets with a PermaSkin finish.

The 54mm insulated timber door has a U value of 1.0. Rather than being painted, the door is vacuum wrapped in a pre-coloured thermoplastic film. The film is flexible to accommodate the natural expansion of the wooden door yet extremely strong. It is UV weather and fade resistant as well as scratch and chemically resistant. This cost effective PermaSkin technology from BASF produces a long life, maintenance free finish in a single step and retains the original appearance of the wood grain.

“Doorsets from Manse Masterdor Ltd were selected because they consistently achieve the highest exposure category in testing, showing the Masterdor to be one of the most airtight doorsets on the market,” says BASF’s project manager Claire Farrar.

The BASF House is part of the university’s Creative Energy Homes Project, a research and educational showcase that aims to provide constructors and developers with affordable solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency in the Built Environment.

Two PhD students at the University of Nottingham are living in and studying the low energy house for 12 months to evaluate the latest energy efficient designs, construction techniques and technologies that have been used to build and equip the house. The house is one of six planned for the site at the School of Built Environment to showcase innovative state-of-the-art energy efficient homes of the future. Two more houses are under construction; the other three will start onsite soon – all featuring thermally efficient doorsets from Manse Masterdor Ltd.
